October 12, 2009 # 9:22 am # Historical, Tourism Site, YogyakartaVredeburg Fortress ( meaning Fortress of Peace in English) is one of the traces of the Dutch colonialization in Yogyakarta many years ago. The fort is located just at the end of Jl. Ahmad Yani right across Gedung Agung Yogyakarta. The fortress was originally named Rustenberg fortress when built by the Dutch Colonial Government in 1760. It functioned as the resting site of the General Governor of the Dutch. It has been renovated between the year 1765-1788 and was later named into Vredeburg Fortress. In 1985, the government changed the function of the fortress into a museum. The museum stores a collection of other remains of Yogyakarta history during the Dutch Colonialization, such as dioramas, replicas, miniatures, furnitures, machinery and others. On special occasions, the fortress is used to hold the Yogyakarta Art Festival and sometimes art events, workshops, food bazaar, and cultural discussion.
