The existence of this principality is connected strongly to the history of Keraton Yogyakarta. The history dated back to the year 1813, when Prince Notokusumo, the son of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, was throned as Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya (K.G.P.A.A) Paku Alam I, therefore earning the right to reside in the palace, Todah, the palace is home to Sri Paduka Paku Alam IX and his family. Sri Paduka Alam IX is currently the Vice Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Beside being the home of Sri Paku Alam IX, the Pura is often used to host traditional events, such as the Garebeg Ceremony, the Offering Ceremony on Glagah Beach, Heirloom Cleansing in the month of Suro, Javanese Traditional Fashion Show, and many more.
