Kotagede

It’s about 5 km away from Yogyakarta city. According to history, the area was once used as the home of the Mataram Empire. Since the 1930s, Kotagede is known as the center of silverwork industry in Yogyakarta. You can find many silver shops alongside the area. In fact some shops even arrange workshops where visitors can witness the process of transforming pure silver into various kinds of jewelry and other silver products.
Beside being famous for its silverwork industry, Kotagede is also known for the ancient Cemetery of Mataram Kings. In order to enter the cemetery, one must wear traditional clothes that can be rented at the place.
