The monument is located just 3 km from the center of the Yogyakarta city. The Jogja Kembali monument was built to commemorate the struggling history of Indonesian troops in banishing the colonialization of the Dutch. According to history, although Indonesia had been independent since the year 1945, the Dutch still tried to colonialize the country during Indonesia’s early years of independence (1948-1949). But thanks to the burning passion of the Indonesian troops and citizens, as well as the President and Vice President during that era, Soekarno & Hatta, Indonesia was finally able to drive away the Dutch on the 27th of December 1949. Deriving from that history, a concept of making a monumental museum occurred. That museum was eventually built on June 29 1985, and finished 4 years later on the 6th of July 1989. Jogja Kembali actually means “Jogja Returns” in English, and corresponding with the name, it stands as a symbol the refunctioning of Jogja as Indonesia’s capital city and the withdrawal of the Dutch troop.

On the second floor there are ten dioramas depicting the battling scenes of Indonesia’s struggle to reoccupy the capital of Republic Indonesia from the Dutch Colonial from December 1948 until 1949. On the balustrade(balcony), there are forty reliefs depicting the history of the Indonesian citizens’ struggle for the Independence on August 17th, 1945, until the international recognition of the new-born Republic on Desember 27th, 1949.The main article of this floor is the red and white national flag of Indonesia.
