Jogja Gallery

Jogja Gallery is an art gallery that shows the work of Yogyakarta artists who has made an impact in the art field from the 1970s. The gallery is located on Jl.Pekapalan No. 7, North Square Yogyakarta. The building is housed in an ex-cinema building that was built by the Netherlands in 1929. Presently, the land belongs to Kraton.

Jogja Gallery was launched on September 19 2006 just after the fierce earthquake that hit Yogyakarta. PT. Jogja Tamtama Budaya was the company that established the gallery. Having a typical Javanese design for its architecture, the gallery’s main purpose is to promote the rich cultural arts that Yogyakarta possesses both nationally and internationally. Not only does it promote some of the best arts from Yogyakarta artist, it also concerns on the preservation of these priceless culture and artworks for generations to come.

Jogja Gallery views artworks from artists such as Widayat, Fadjar Sidik and Aming Prayitno who was known for their work in the 1970s, Edhi Soenarso, the first sculptor to make monumental works in the gallery, and Putu Sutawijaya who is a famous contemporary artist who studied for many years in Yogyakarta. From the start of its establishment, Jogja Gallery has been hosting exhibitions regularly. Until today, it continues to display the works of young Javanese artists who are on the verge of making a breakthrough in the art world.
