Imogiri
October 12, 2009 # 10:17 am # Historical, Tourism Site, YogyakartaImogiri is sub-district in the district of Bantul, located around 17 km south of Yogyakarta. It is known as a graveyard complex of rulers from the Sultanate of Mataram. The graveyard was believed to be built by Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo, around the year 1632-1640. In order to reach the graveyard, one must climb as high as 200 meters of stairs. What’s interesting about this site is that the amount of stairs to climb can vary for each person climbing it. Myth claims that whoever came up with a count of 345 stairs, then his/her wish will be granted. The graveyard holds mysteries for local residents, because despite being in a hilly area, trees near the area grow prosperous. Because of the sacredness, plants and animals living in the area are never disturbed by human hands, as it will ruin the ecosystem that has been developed.
Once in every year, at the month of Suro in Javanese Calendar, a cleaning ritual is held. The ritual is believed to bring good fortune to the residents.
