October 12, 2009 # 9:41 am # Palace, Tourism Site, YogyakartaGedung Agung Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Presidential Palace) is located just across Vredeburg Fortress in Jl. Jendral Ahmad Yani. It was started being established during the Dutch colonial era in 1824 by a Dutch architect named A. Payen. But because the Diponegoro War (1825-1930) occurred during that period, the construction of the palace was postponed, and was continued after the war. In 1932 the palace was constructed. At first, the palace was used as a residence for Dutch officials. In 1946, when Yogyakarta became the capital of Indonesia, the building became a Presidential Palace and home to President Soekarno. After the capital was moved to Jakarta in 1949 the the palace was not used again as a Presidential Palace.
Today the palace is used to hold national events, such as the ceremony to commemorate the independence on August 17, and also as a place to accept international guests or officials.
