Affandi Museum

Located at the main road between Yogyakarta and Solo, to be exact at Jl.Laksda Adi Sucipto No.167, the area sits on the bank of a small river, the Gajah Wong River. The complex displays artistic pleasures that was designed and made by the Indonesian painting maestro whose name it bears. The historic museum was first made public in the year 1962, and although the maestro has already passed away, his spirit dwells comfortably in each and every one of his masterpiece.
Affandi was and remains one of Indonesia’s foremost impressionist painters who achieved glory throughout his painting career. In order to distribute his hobby as well as supply artistic pleasures for his fans and admirers, he decided to display his paintings in a private museum, which in turn was also his home. Affandi was well known in many asian countries and achieved many honorary title from universities as well as countries outside Indonesia.
The design of the Museum has a uniqueness of its own. The banana leaf looking roof and organic look of the galleries is said to be made inspired by nature. The museum provides as much as 3 galleries for its visitors. The first gallery will be reached upon your enterance at the museum. This large gallery consists lots of the maestro’s paintings. The types of painting tools and mediums also varies in this gallery. There are sketch, watercolor, pastel and oil paintings from the artists. This shows just how well Affandi’s skills are, by mastering different painting techniques using different mediums. Besides the various different paintings from the maestro, an antique bicycle which was owned by the artist in his younger years, stands among the paintings. But the most outstanding feature is old vehicle at one end of the gallery. The shape which resembles a shark, not to mention the bright yellow color, is a feature that will definitely catch our attention
The second Gallrey is only a few steps away from the first. This second gallery offers a new different characteristic. This gallery was built with the aid of the Indonesian government and was officially opened in 1987. This gallery is used as an exhibition site of varieties of Museum painting collection from several well known painters. This gallery has two floors. The first floor consist of abstract paintings and the second floor is dominate by realistic ones.
The third and last gallery was built by the Affandi Foundation in early 1999 and was officially opened by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono in 2000. This gallery is no doubt the newest and most modern looking gallery. It was built to fulfill Affandi’s wishes in order to have enough storages place for his works. This three-floor gallery has the same basic idea, that have a shaped of the rounded curve with a shaped roof like banana leafes.
Affandi passed away in 1990 after suffering from a complication of illness. Corresponding to the maestro’s request, he was buried in the complex of the museum, so that he may rest close to his family and masterpieces. After his death, the museum is organized by the Affandi Foundation until today.
